Pay hike for Tirupur workers

Textile workers

The tripartite agreement signed by the manufacturers’ associations and workers’ unions with the Labour Department in 2006, proposes a hike of 3 per cent to textile workers on their basic pay drawn as on December 31 this year.

But with a sudden downturn in business to United States of America and Europe, two of the prime markets for Tirupur knitwear exporters, and entrepreneurs even contemplating downsizing workforce, there have been a growing concern among the workers whether their pay packet will become heavier.

Accordingly, the basic pay of the workers engaged in cutting, tailoring, ironing and packing sections will go up from Rs. 110.61 for a day to Rs. 113.92 per day.

Basic pay

For those working in checking/inspection departments, the basic pay will be hiked from Rs. 63.12 a day to Rs. 65.01 a day.

Similarly, people posted at manual folding and labelling segments will get an enhanced basic pay of Rs. 56.95 and Rs. 58.60, respectively, against the present rates of Rs. 55.30 and Rs. 56.90. The bundling assistants and damage inspectors will get their basic pay hiked from Rs. 31.63 and Rs. 44.21 for a day, respectively, to Rs. 32.58 and Rs. 45.54.

Dearness allowance

Besides the basic pay, workers will get a ‘variable dearness allowance’ calculated based on the cost of living index published by the state government periodically.

Package sought

The textile entrepreneurs are of the opinion that to meet the additional financial commitment of wage hike at a time when the markets have been down and to avoid retrenchment, the government intervention in the form of more ‘fiscal stimulus packages’ for the sector is imperative.
